Zombies with Candy – The Walking Dead Premiers Halloween Night

October 14, 2010

The Walking Dead on AMC
Halloween is easily my favorite time of year. With AMC airing the first episode of The Walking Dead on Halloween (October 31 at 10pm EST), I’m going to skip trick or treating for the first time in years. This is better than christmas, people.

TWD is one of the best ongoing comic series out there, with over 70 horrifying and disturbing issues out there.  It’s about a small town cop thrust into a zombie apocalypse who tries really hard not to die. Oh and his family is missing, so he goes looking for them.

The zombies are pure Romero-esque, so none of that running on ceilings bullshit.

Did I mention the series is being directed and scripted by Frank Darabont? You know, the guy who directed The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist? So not only is he an excellent filmmaker, he’s also kind of an expert at translating written properties.

If you’re not familiar at all with The Walking Dead, I highly recommend buying the first trade paperback. If you’re not sold yet, go to the AMC site and watch a motion comic of the first issue, it’s pretty excellent.

The key to the series is the characters, with the zombies set as a backdrop. No super-zombies, crazy scientists or space invasions in this series. Just humanity at its gory, awful best.

So this Halloween evening I’m going to be gorging myself on chocolate (I like the ones with the caramel centers) and watching The Walking Dead on AMC. You should be too, after all those of us whose brains have rotted due to TV will be last against the wall when the zombies come.
